MED Hoses

abrasion resistant, lightweight and flexible

Scandinavian Star, Star Princess, and Pallas – you are probably already familiar with the names as well as with the related disasters. A ferry, a cruise ship and a cargo ship were very badly damaged by fires on the high seas. Consequently, maritime firefighting is an important safety element. High-quality and reliable fire hoses are a crucial component when it comes to marine firefighting.

Firefighting operations on the high seas save lives. Moreover, the well-thought-out use of fire hoses on freighters and oil rigs safeguards not only financial interests but also the integrity of the seas. Maritime firefighting faces different challenges compared to that on land. PARSCH fire hoses for marine use are specially made and standardized for service and use at sea.

Properties of fire hoses for marine use

Seafaring conditions can be rough. A permanently reliable fire hose must also be adapted to the extreme conditions on our oceans. On board of a ship or an oil rig spare parts are available, but not in large quantities due to lack of space. Therefore, the following PARSCH fire hoses for marine use are maintenance-free:

  • PARSCH Maritime
  • PARSCH Maritime Red
  • REELOFLEX
  • REELOFLEX Red

Extreme weather phenomena on the oceans can range from low to high temperatures. A high-quality fire hose should be cold-resistant down to -30 °C and heat-resistant (short-term) up to 100 °C.

Maintenance-free operation is increased by three special properties of PARSCH fire hoses for marine use: weather-resistant, ageing-resistant, ozone-resistant. Since things can quickly get tight in the passageways below deck as well as on deck itself, well-designed fire hoses for use in such areas must be lightweight, pliable as well as kink resistant.

In the case of fires at sea, extinguishing measures must be initiated in a matter of seconds. Suitable hoses are pulled and scrubbed fiercely over grid floors and potential salt incrustations. PARSCH fire hoses for marine and maritime use show their full quality in these situations thanks to low friction loss and high abrasion resistance.

Needless to say, these fire hoses are also flame resistant.

DIN standards for marine fire hoses

Fires occurring on the high seas are usually completely different from those on land. On ships and oil rigs, for example, their steel walls can become quite hot, so that the fire can easily spread to flammable materials as well.

Therefore, the use of standardized fire hoses for marine applications is important. The four designated PARSCH fire hoses are standardized according to DIN EN 14540. With this European standard, it is precisely defined according to which requirements and procedures flat hoses are tested.

The following rules apply for standard certification. In use, the maximum working pressure is 1.5 MPa. The inner diameter of the hose is between 25 and 52 mm. The mentioned standard applies exclusively to those hoses which are used for the purpose of fire extinguishing. Uncoated hoses tested in this way must withstand -20 °C during normal operation and -30 °C during exceptional operation.

Fire fighting in the shipping industry with fire hoses

In the event of fires at sea, the ship must be cooled as quickly as possible. In addition to internal extinguishing equipment, mobile and adaptable fire hoses act as the most important instrument for this purpose. Firefighters at sea should always be careful not to pump too much water into the ship’s interior. If this does happen, the ship will list and may capsize in the worst case.
